Monty Python’s SPAMALOT

Book & Lyrics by ERIC IDLE Music by JOHN DU PREZ & ERIC IDLE

Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits, and French people. Did we mention the bevy of beautiful showgirls? The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony® Awards, including Best Musical, and was followed by two successful West End runs. The outrageous, uproarious, and gloriously entertaining story of King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake will delight audiences as they search for the Holy Grail and “always look on the bright side of life.”

A musical based off from the motion picture “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” From the original screenplay by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin

Original Broadway Production produced by Boyett Ostar Productions,The Shubert Organization, Arielle Tepper Madover, Stephanie McClelland/Lawrence Horowitz, Elan V McAllister/Allan S. Gordon, Independent Presenters Network, Roy Furman, GRS Associates, Jam Theatricals, TGA Entertainment, and Clear Channel Entertainment.

To Prepare: 16-32 bars from a song from a contemporary or classic musical. Song must be memorized.

Effective song selections will highlight your vocal range and character choices.

The artistic team may ask you to sing the song more than once or ask you other questions to help us in casting.

September 6th

Logistics: All actors are required to be in attendance for the full audition time period (4:30-7:30pm).

To Prepare: Nothing! All actors will participate in a dance call, please come dressed to dance. Sides will be given out to read, and we may teach you a section of a song from the show to perform.

If you need to see the sides in advance as an accessibility accommodation, please email vanessa@theatreaspen.org to request them.

A note on casting:

The Creative Team is diligent in our efforts to cast students in roles that will both help them experience growth, as well as ensure the success of each production as a whole.

Please send any questions to education@theatreaspen.org. We look forward to seeing you at auditions!

Character Breakdown:

KING ARTHUR* – The King of England, who sets out on a quest to form the Knights of the Round Table and find the Holy Grail. Great humor. Good singer.

THE LADY OF THE LAKE – A Diva. Strong, beautiful, possesses mystical powers. The leading lady of the show. Great singing voice is essential, as she must be able to sing effortlessly in many styles and vocal registers. Sings everything from opera to pop to scatting. Gets angry easily.

SIR ROBIN* – A Knight of the Round Table. Ironically called “Sir Robin the Brave,” though he couldn’t be more cowardly. Joins the Knights for the singing and dancing. A good mover.

SIR LANCELOT – A Knight of the Round Table. He is fearless to a bloody fault but through a twist of fate discovers his “softer side.” Ideally this actor should be great with character voices and accents.

PATSY* – King Arthur’s horse and servant. Under-appreciated but always longing for Arthur’s approval. Good, funny, physical mover with some tap dancing.

SIR GALAHAD* – A Knight of the Round Table. Begins as Dennis, a lower

class “mud gatherer” who becomes knighted and transforms into the dashing Sir

Galahad. Strong bari-tenor singing required.

SIR BEDEVERE*  – A Knight of the Round Table. An inept scholar. Also plays DENNIS GALAHAD’S MOTHER, a shrill peasant woman; and CONCORDE, Sir Lancelot’s horse.

HISTORIAN/NOT DEAD FRED/ PRINCE HERBERT/ MINSTREL* – A tweedy academic. Also plays NOT DEAD FRED, a sickly little fellow who — despite others’ beliefs — claims he is “not yet dead”; a MINSTREL in Sir Robin’s band; and PRINCE HERBERT, the hopeful and frilly prince who loves to sing and pines for his love atop a tower. Good mover.

ENSEMBLE (6-12)* – Seeking strong dancers and singers to play many roles

including the other Knights of the Round Table, Sir Not Appearing, Sir Bohrs, Bodies in

“Not Yet Dead,” the Dancing Monk, the Dancing Nun, French Citizens & Guards, Finland Citizens, Robin’s Minstrels, the Camelot Girls, the Laker Girls, Knights of Ni and more! Dance skills preferred; tap skills a bonus. Ensemble members may also take on small roles such as Brother Maynard, The French Taunter, The French Guard, Tim the Enchanter, Mayor, Prince Herbert’s Father, and The Black Knight.

There are SO many small roles and featured moments in Spamalot – they will be allocated among the whole cast (ensemble and named roles) as makes sense in terms of actor strengths and the logistics of the show.

*indicates role may be played by an actor of any gender
