The proposed theatre is designed to support exceptional productions while creating more opportunities for audiences, artists and community organizations. Every element makes the space more functional, welcoming and connected to the community it serves.
Theatre Aspen is not introducing a new use to Rio Grande Park. It is reinvesting in the place it has called home for almost 40 years.
The theatre and John Denver Sanctuary have long complemented one another, creating a special setting that draws residents and visitors into the park. The proposed design continues that relationship with a lower profile, below-grade level, planted roof and landscaping that integrate the theatre into its surroundings.
The plans align with the 2026 City of Aspen Parks & Open Space Strategic Plan by creating community spaces, strengthening access, and fostering sustainable spaces.
The current design responds directly to feedback from Aspen City Council since 2022. The previously proposed fly tower has been eliminated, the height has been reduced and the overall site impact is slightly smaller than it is today.

A better facility does not mean a more exclusive one. Theatre Aspen will continue offering 3,000+ discounted tickets and 300 free tickets for organizations like English In Action, Aspen and Roaring Fork School Districts and more each season through the local and community ticketing programs. All while creating a building that is easier and more comfortable to navigate.
