The project is moving through the City of Aspen’s public land-use review process. The design has already changed substantially in response to feedback, including eliminating the fly tower, lowering the building and reducing its overall impact on the site.
Residents will have opportunities to review the plans, ask questions and provide input before a public vote.

2022 | Early Planning
Theatre Aspen began exploring how to reinvest in its longtime home.
2025 | City Council Direction
Aspen City Council authorized Theatre Aspen to move forward with the land-use review process.
2026 | Design Refinement
Theatre Aspen revises the design in response to City Council.
2027 | Public Review + Possible Vote
City’s land-use review process includes public hearings, plus community engagement. Aspen voters will ultimately decide whether the project moves forward.
2028 | Earliest Anticipated Construction
Theatre Aspen knows the community is tired of construction. The project is still a few years away, allowing time for public review, coordination and careful construction planning.
The rugby fields, Rio Grande Recycling Center, and John Denver Sanctuary will remain open during construction. The Rio Grande Trail will have temporary reroutes and construction vehicles accessing the site will be managed by flaggers. A detailed construction management plan will address deliveries, noise, and staging. Theatre Aspen will provide clear updates before and during construction.
We know construction will create some disruption. Our commitment is to plan carefully, communicate clearly and minimize impacts wherever possible.
