Anastasia
Book by Terrance McNally, Music by Stephen Flaherty, Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens
From Tony winners Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, creators of such Broadway classics as Ragtime and Once On This Island, this dazzling show transports its audience from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing con man and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family.
Cost: $925 (scholarships & payment plans available)
Grade Range: Actors in grades 7-12 are eligible to audition. One younger actor is also sought for the role of Young Anastasia – see character breakdowns below. Young Anastasia auditions will be slightly different, see below.

To Prepare: One 16-32 bar (30-60 second) cut from a song from a contemporary or classic musical. Songs must be memorized.
Please either provide an accompaniment track or bring sheet music correctly marked for your live accompaniment. If using a track, tracks must be instrumental only, no vocals may be present. Effective song selections will highlight your vocal range and character choices.
We may also test your vocal range to determine fit for vocal tracks. Please arrive fully warmed up.
The artistic team may ask you to sing the song more than once or ask you other questions to help us in casting. Please do not prepare a selection longer than 60 seconds – if your piece is longer we may cut you off for time.
Callbacks – September 4th
Logistics: All actors auditioning for the production are required to be in attendance for the full callback time period (4:30-7:30pm).
To Prepare: Nothing in advance!
Dance Call: All actors will participate in a dance call, please come dressed to dance with appropriate footwear. This means form fitting clothing, no jeans, sports bra if applicable, nothing delicate/that will get ripped or caught. Leggings, leotards/workout tops, fitted joggers, athletic shorts are all acceptable options. Jazz shoes/sneakers, ballet slippers, or flexible tennis sneakers are acceptable as footwear.
Sides will be given out to read, and we may teach you a section of a song from the show to perform. Not all actors will be asked to sing a second time at the callback.
If you need to see the sides in advance as an accessibility accommodation, please email vanessa@theatreaspen.org to request them.
We may release some actors beginning at 6:30pm, but please hold until 7:30 in your schedule for our callback day.
A note on casting:
The Creative Team is diligent in our efforts to cast students in roles that will both help them experience growth, as well as ensure the success of each production as a whole.
Please send any questions to education@theatreaspen.org. We look forward to seeing you at auditions!
Anya/Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanov
Range: G3-F5, Belt to D5
Anya is brave, fiery, witty, and above all determined. With no memory of her life before age 17 and having lived through the Russian Revolution, Anya jumps at the sound of gunshots and is distrustful of strangers, but there is steel hiding just beneath the surface. Anya is strong-willed and compassionate. Her mantra, “Home, love, family” is her goal. All she knows is her family is in Paris and she will find them however she can. Strong mover & some dance preferred.
Dmitry Sudayev
Range: A2-G4
Dmitry is a scoundrel with a heart of gold. Dmitry is a conman who does all he does to get out of poverty and is not above lying, cheating, and stealing to do so–until he meets Anya. What starts as just another scheme turns into the adventure of a lifetime that requires Dimitry to look inward and figure out how to put the one he loves before himself. Strong moved preferred.
Vladimir “Vlad” Popov
Range: A2-F4. Comic Baritone
Vlad is Dmitry’s partner in crime and surrogate father. Before the revolution, he scammed his way through society pretending to be a count. Vlad is dramatic, crafty, and a big softie at heart. While he, like Dmitry, is not above lying, cheating, and stealing, he cares greatly for his loved ones and is generally affable, though he can be calculating when he needs to be. Strong mover preferred.
Deputy Commissioner Gleb Vaganov
Range: A2-Gb4.
Gleb is the villain of the show, though not a bad person. He fully believes in the Communist ideals he follows. Loyal, honest, and hard-working, Gleb almost has the potential to be a hero. A deeply conflicted person, Gleb’s infatuation with Anya leads to his battle with the idea of doing one’s duty vs. doing what is right.
Countess Lily Malevsky-Malevitch
Range: G3-C5
Lily is the lady in waiting to the Dowager Empress. She has been by the Dowager’s side since before the revolution. Lily is clever, dutiful, and fun (when not working for the Dowager). She deals with her exile from Russia with a resigned dark humor. She and Vlad were once an item (unbeknownst to her husband) and rekindle their romance upon reuniting. Stronger dancer preferred.
Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna Romanov
Range: F3-Bb4
The Dowager Empress has lost everything she once held dear and must now put up with imposter upon imposter never allowing her to grieve in peace. She is icy, proud, and regal to all but her family, but has a very sharp wit. She is especially warm to Anastasia both as a child and after it’s revealed that Anya is the princess. She commands authority and attention the minute she enters a room.
Young Anastasia
Range: C4-C5
Young Anastasia is the willful, brave, proud, and precocious youngest daughter of the Tsar. She has a special bond with her grandmother, Nana.
Age Requirement: Seeking actors between the ages of 7-11 who could read as a 6-8 year old. The actor cast in the role of Young Anastasia will have a specialized rehearsal schedule, tuition level, and audition process, as specified in this document.
Alexei
Range: C4-C5
Alexei was the Tsarevich (Heir to the throne) and only boy of the Romanov siblings. He suffered from debilitating hemophilia that often left him bedridden. Anya mentions that he was her best friend.
Additional Roles:
Olga, Tatiana, Mariya (the other Romanov Sisters)
Paulina, Dunya, Marfa (three prostitutes who audition for the Fake-Anastasia scheme)
Odette and Swans
Teen Anya
Commissioner Gorlinsky
Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna
Female Reporter
Countess Gregory
Tsar Nicholas II Romanov
Count Ipolitov
Siegfried
Von Rothbart
Townsfolk, Royal Servants, Bolshevik Officers and Soldiers, Parisians, Reporters, Aristocrats
